Re Rex Minerals Applications to the Development Assessment Commission re:

Road realignments
Modifications of Ardrossan wharf

In October 2013, Rex Minerals lodged two applications with the Development Assessment Commission (DAC):

o    Application for road realignments

o    Application for modification to the existing wharf infrastructure at Ardrossan. In the road realignment application, Rex sought approval to:

o    divert St Vincent’s Highway nearer to the coast to provide a buffer between the pit and the highway

o    close the current Minlaton turnoff (because the existing turnoff is directly over the proposed pit and

o    construct a new Minlaton diversion along the existing non-bituminized Pine Point Road.

The YPLOG committee has major concerns about these road changes, as outlined in our formal submission to DAC, which is attached for your information.

As a follow-up to this formal written submission, members of the YPLOG Committee attended a DAC hearing in Adelaide on 30th January 2014 to give oral evidence to the Development Assessment Commission.

Another member gave evidence in relation to the Ardrossan wharf upgrades.

We raised a number of issues on both the road diversions and the wharf which the DAC Commissioners seemed to take on board.

At the end of the hearing, the Chair of DAC indicated they would seek further clarification from Rex on some of the issues we had raised.

According to a recent Rex release, DAC have now recommended to the Minister for Planning and Development that he grant the two applications.

However, as far as we are aware, this has not yet been confirmed by DAC.

We will keep you informed of any further developments.
